The Cockney Boys

Written By Oli

WestHam was founded in 1895 they were called Thames Ironworks FC. In the 1900s they named the club WestHam United. Nine years after they moved to the Boleyn Ground where they played 112 years before moving to the London Stadium in 2016.

During their time at the Boleyn Ground WestHam celebrated some successes. Our first big trophy was the Fa Cup in 1964 which was followed by the English Supercup and European Cup winners cup in 1965 . Those years were described as the glory years with legendary players like Geoff Hurst and Bobby Moore. WestHam also impressed the nation with two FA Cup win in 1975 and 1980.

“The Academy of Football”

WestHam are known as one of the most successful talent development programmes in England. WestHam contributed to the national squad of the three lions that became world champions in 1966. The most memorable player of the team was club legend Bobby Moore.

Rivals

The fans at WestHam are described as passionate fans, during the 1970s and 1980s their was very high levels of hooliganism in our fan base. To this day WestHam still has strong rivals with other clubs. The most hot tempered matches are against Millwall and Spurs.

Nicknames at the club

WestHam is known as The Hammers and The Irons. We also get referred as the Cockney Boys a nickname that describes to a certain type of Londoner.

The stadium

In 2016 WestHam moved to the London Stadium where they play their home matches. When moving to the stadium there was mixed emotions and there still is. The venue was used as a stadium in the 2012 Olympics and is located in Stratford. The stadium has 60,000 seats during football matches which is double the amount at the Boleyn Ground. The stadium has been rebuilt a few times throughout the years to suit football fans and is also rumoured to have an extra 6,500 seats in the season 2025 making the total to around 68,000 capacity.

Statistics and records at the club

Every year the fans of WestHam choose the Hammer of the year. Trevor Brooking won the award five times which is one more than Billy Bonds, Julian Dicks and Bobby Moore. The legend Billy Bonds is the player with the most appearances in the league with 663 games and Bobby Moore is the most capped player with 108 games.

Vic Watson is the player with the most goals at WestHam with 326 goals between 1920 and 1935, followed by Geoff Hurst another club legend.

The highest paid transfer fee was in 2022when we signed midfielder Lucas Paqueta for £51,000,000. The second highest paid transfer fee was in 2019  when we signed Sebastian Haller for £45,000,000

We are also have been In Europe three times in the row (2021,2022,2023)

To finish off the records WestHam won a number of trophies but the one that stands out for me is last year when we won the UEFA Europa Conference League trophy.
